HISTORICAL BACK GROUND :

Although politically demarcated in to the Bulathsinghala constituency, this arable land in which our Resort is situated belongs to the ancient Palinda Kingdom that flourished about 600 years ago with a mass population. The Heir to the throne, prince Weediya Bandara is believed to have selected this area for his settlement as environment was magnificently protected by nature as a fortress with huge mountains, passes, rivers and massive rocks that evaded sudden enemy invasions. In this territory he had trained and built up an invincible army, a great armory and also a granary to feed the warriors in their endeavor to eradicate the Portuguese from this land.

This vast arable land mass of which the boundaries are Bentota River and Kalu Ganga by the two sides in present Kalutara District was previously known as Pasyodun Rata. It extent is roughly considered as 256 square miles.

 
   
WHO IS THIS WEEDIYA BANDARA ?

Prince Weediya Bandara the big built youth with blue blood from Pillassa who enrolled as a warrior in the royal court of king Buvanekabahu in 1510 and remained brave and prominent in martial arts had been a Regal Gladiator. It is said that when he had no one to fight with he went to thick jungles and fought with elephants, tigers and wild buffaloes for his young blood were so stimulant and brave. The king's daughter princess Samudra Devi was given in marriage to him as the monarch loved him so much for his bravery. But antagonized by the encroachment of Portugese, he fled to Palindanuwara with the intention of building a mighty army, granary and armory to eradicate Portuguese intruders from motherland. Once he was the glorious and merit full custodian of the sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha and historians say that he once protecting the golden casket of Sacred Tooth Relic in left hand fought the enemy with the sword in his right hand in the battle field.

In consequence to his animosity against Portuguese, he was deprived of the throne by the king Buwanekabahu, who adamantly selected the Prince Dharmapala the son of Weediya Bandara to be crowned instead.

Nevertheless he was so short tempered that over a suspicion he threw forcibly his beloved queen Samudra Devi to the Diyawanna Oya and let her die of suffocation. He proceeded to Jaffna with the intention of chasing out Portuguese from Jaffna with military assistance of Northern chieftain. But he had to battle with native Tamil militants instead. Unexpectedly while fighting he was stabbed at the back with a dagger by an unseen enemy where he sustained severe injuries and succumbed to death in the battle field. The tamarind tree under which he died at Nallur Kovll premises still may be seen.

 
 
   
     
THEN AND NOW :

Uskvalley is a European formation of a name that rooted from the Sinhala word "Us Keliya" which denotes "The area proclaimed for Horse Breeding and training designed for the forth coming great maneuver. When Europeans acquired this land for Rubber cultivation the word Uskeliya diverted to the pronunciation of Uskvalley.

Lathpadura is yet another beautiful hamlet named after a Royal Silk towel being offered in charity by the regal to the Saman Dewalaya, which Holly place, had been dedicated to the Deity Saman for a period unknown. The charity received meaning " Lath Pandura "

Molkawa a little bazaar situated in the outskirts of resort center, which bazaar was assigned for security purposes by the warrior monarch. Mahakawala means great security station. The security station was established here by the foresighted king so wisely that no invaders could encroach the territory as it was surround by a great river.

Bellana village still a pass is meant for kings spies to be on alert and look out for invaders. Balana meaning "on looking point" became Bellana.

Morapitiya a rapidly developing area presently, was meant for the arena of martial arts during that ancient era. The warriors ware trained in this sector of martial arts that would be necessary in the battlefield, for the gladiators. A well-secured security network had been established here as " Mura " meant Security.

Badureliya another township adjacent to LathPandura which has emerged as a commercial center in the area is renamed PalindaNuwara.

In the vicinity, there are several other villages too which have been etymologically named during the regime by this Royal gladiator.
